The 2022 Florida Gators roster offers a blend of veteran leadership and up-and-coming talent, as the team brings back 19 letterwinners from the previous season while also bringing in 17 freshmen. According to Perfect Game, the Florida Gators were able to recruit an impressive collection of sixteen freshmen and one transfer to finish as the nation’s No.1 recruiting class despite having each of its top-three ranked signees sign contracts with Major League Baseball this past summer.
Despite this, the Gators finished as the nation’s No.1 recruiting class (No.2 at D1Baseball, Baseball America). Outfielder Jud Fabian, who was named to the Third Team All-American last season, and left-handed pitcher Hunter Barco, who was named to the Second Team Southeast All-Region in 2021, are all among the returning players.
Fabian leads a group of six returning positional starters from last year’s squad: first baseman/designated hitter Kris Armstrong, first baseman/outfielder Kendrick Calilao, second baseman Colby Halter, and shortstop Josh Rivera in addition to Freshman All-SEC outfielder Sterlin Thompson.
Both players have already earned Preseason All-America status. On the other hand, Barco is expected to play a pivotal role in the Gators’ rotation alongside fellow member of the USA Collegiate National Team Brandon Sproat. The MLB Pipeline rankings place Barco (No.54) and Sproat (No.98) among the top 100 prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft.
Additionally, Fabian (No.45) and Thompson (No.90) on the positional side are ranked among the top 100 prospects. The Gators will kick up their 2022 campaign with a three-game home series against Liberty of the Atlantic Sun Conference on the weekend of February 18-20.
