Do boll weevils still exist?

History and geographical range The boll weevil is not a species that was originally found in the United States. It is believed to have originated in Mexico and Central America, where it fed on the cottons of indigenous trees. In pre-Columbian periods in Central America, it most likely adapted to farmed cottons and thrived there.

Around the year 1892, it was found for the first time in Texas, which is located in the United States. By 1922, the boll weevil had found its way to the Carolinas after moving at an average rate of roughly 60 miles per year throughout the Cotton Belt as it made its way westward. Around 1913, it was discovered in Missouri for the first time.

Figure 1. In the southern part of the state of Missouri, the distribution of boll weevils. In the United States of America, the boll weevil has been exterminated as of today. The cotton-producing states of the mid-South, which include Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee, as well as sections of Alabama and New Mexico, were the states that were responsible for the weevil’s eradication in its last stages.

  • North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Florida, Georgia, and sections of Alabama were among the first states to successfully eradicate the boll weevil.
  • Another subspecies of the boll weevil was discovered in Arizona, but this one is mostly focused on feeding on cotton’s wild relatives.
  • Cotton was the only plant in Missouri that served as a host for the boll weevil, which meant that it could be found across the whole cotton-producing region of the state.

It looked to be most plentiful along Crowley’s Ridge, a ridge running north to south that extends from the Ozarks south into Arkansas, as well as in regions that were in close proximity to important rivers (Figure 1). The researchers worked hard to get an accurate picture of the distribution throughout the state. What County Is Enterprise Alabama In
