During A-Day weekend, Crimson Tide stalwarts Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell will be recognized for their contributions.
Wilbur Jackson and John Mitchell, both legendary members of the Crimson Tide (University of Alabama Athletics) Jackson made history in 1970 when he became the first African American student-athlete to receive a scholarship to play football for the Crimson Tide, and Mitchell cemented his place in the record books in 1971 when he became the first African American to play in a varsity football game for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Both of these accomplishments took place in the same year. Jackson, who was born in Ozark, Alabama, went on to receive All-SEC accolades and was the captain of the team that won the national title in 1973. After that, San Francisco selected him ninth overall in the NFL Draft in 1974, and he went on to have a career in the NFL for a total of nine years.
Jackson completed his career by winning Super Bowl XVII with the Washington Redskins and was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in the year 2007. After compiling an All-American resume during his time at Eastern Arizona Junior College, Mitchell made the move to Alabama.
This success continued for Mitchell while he was wearing the maroon and white, as he was named All-American, All-SEC, and team captain. Mitchell is originally from Mobile, Alabama. The next year, in 1973, Mitchell became the first African American to be hired as a coach at the University of Alabama, where he worked under the direction of Paul “Bear” Bryant.
Later on in his coaching career, he was a part of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise when they won Super Bowls XL and XLIII. In 2009, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach. Alabama’s spring game attendance for the past 15 years (14 A-Day Games after 2020 was postponed due to COVID) is first in the nation with a total of 1,068,239 fans for an average of 76,303 fans each game, making Alabama the undisputed leader in spring game attendance across the country (maximum capacity of 50,000 in 2021).
The year 2011 had the greatest A-Day turnout in the history of the school (92,310). In 2007, Nick Saban’s first season as head coach, the stadium was packed to its maximum capacity, before an expansion was ever considered (92,138). When further information regarding A-Day becomes available, it will be posted on rolltide.com.
