The name of the event was changed to the Alabama National Fair in 1997 to reflect the fact that a significant number of fairgoers travel from other states to attend. Fairs and agricultural shows have a long and venerable history in the city of Montgomery, dating back to at least the year 1854, which is exactly one hundred years before the current Alabama National Fair was created.

The Alabama State Agricultural Society was responsible for organizing and hosting the annual fair that took place before the Civil War on grounds that were “beautifully located upon the banks of the noble Alabama River, occupying a large, level, grassy plain, to the north of the city,” according to a description that appeared in an issue of Harper’s Weekly published in 1858.

During times of war and economic turmoil, that fair and its successors experienced a fall in attendance. By the year 1930, fairs and agricultural exhibitions were no longer held in Central Alabama. In 1954, the brother of a Montgomery Kiwanian observed the active building site of Garrett Coliseum and suggested, “You know, you really need to hold a fair here.” This sparked the concept for a whole new exposition to be held at this location.

After only a few short months, members of the Montgomery Kiwanis Club had established the South Alabama Fair Association, Inc. with a meager budget of $500 borrowed from the Kiwanis Club treasury. This was accomplished after taking a trip to Macon to get a first-hand look at the operations of a fair. Kiwanians were driven to make their endeavor a success; in fact, several of them had committed their own personal finances to pay any losses that may have resulted from their endeavor not being successful.

The Kiwanis Club of Montgomery was well on its way to being synonymous with a joyous October festival that returns year-round benefits to the community as a consequence of their combined efforts and abilities, which resulted in a net profit of more than $20,000 in that vital first year.

Boys and Girls Clubs, Brantwood Children’s Home, Camp ASCCA, Children’s Harbor, Cleveland Avenue YMCA, Inspector Detector, Landmarks Foundation, Montgomery Area Council on Aging, Montgomery Area Food Bank, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Montgomery Public Schools’ Reading is Fundamental, Girl Scouts, Group Homes for Children, and Father Walter’s Resurrection Catholic Mission are some of the organizations that have benefited from contributions made by the Kiwanis Club and funded by the Fair.

The name of the Fair was altered to better represent its expanded size as it progressed through its history. After undergoing a name change in 1969, the South Alabama Fair is now known as the South Alabama State Fair. The name of the event was changed to the Alabama National Fair in 1997 to reflect the fact that a significant number of fairgoers travel from other states to attend.

The Fair does not operate as a department of the State of Alabama and continues to function as an autonomous, self-supporting, non-profit business. Despite the fact that the Fair Association receives some assistance in the payout of prize money from state and county involvement, the Fair Association supplies the majority of the money that is given out in prizes and works independently of both the State and any other fair.

The majority of members of the Kiwanis Club of Montgomery contribute their skills and time to the various events that are held in support of the Fair. The majority of Kiwanians come to the fairs and actively work as entrance ticket takers on the gates and on a variety of other key committees.
