The 25th of November in 2011 0 of 10 When Alabama and Auburn play one other on Saturday, it will be the next chapter in a rivalry that is often considered to be among the finest in all of sports. As is customary, a great deal depends on the outcome of the Iron Bowl.
In the past several years, there have been few few games that have held as much meaning as this one. Once more, fans will be watching the game because of its mystery as well as its significance to the world. There is a probability that Alabama will win the National Championship if they are successful.
The motivation for Auburn comes in the form of bragging rights and the opportunity to play the role of spoiler. Both of the teams that compete in the Iron Bowl have illustrious histories, and so does the game itself. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s take a look at ten interesting facts about the Iron Bowl.1 of 10 The inaugural game of the Iron Bowl was held in Birmingham in the year 1893.
The score was 32-22 for Auburn. After the 1907 season, the two teams did not compete against one another any longer due to a disagreement. After the Alabama Congress threatened the schools with a loss of financing in 1948, they did not resume playing until the following year. Since then, the two teams have competed against one another year.2 of 10 With a record of 40-34-1 in the all-time series, Alabama has the lead.
However, Auburn has a record of 15-10 during the past 25 years. Although Alabama is the favorite to win this year’s game, the record books should be thrown aside.3 of 10 The presence of the steel industry in Birmingham, Alabama, where the game was played for years, gave rise to the game’s nickname, the “Iron Bowl.” The game pits Alabama against Auburn.
In the 1950s, famed Auburn football coach Shug Jordan is credited with coming up with the name.4 of 10 It wasn’t until the 1965 season that Alabama took the lead in the Iron Bowl series they were playing in. Despite the recent achievements of Auburn, Alabama has maintained their dominant position since that time.
Currently, Alabama has a six-point advantage in the series.5 of 10 The 1960 matchup was the Iron Bowl with the fewest points scored, and Alabama won with a score of 3-0. The Iron Bowl game in 1969 was the greatest point total of any game in the tournament’s history.
Both teams scored a total of 75 points, with Auburn coming out on top with a 49-26 victory.6 of 10 Over the course of its history, the Iron Bowl has been home to a number of extraordinary winning streaks. Between the years 1959 and 1968, Alabama was victorious in eight of their nine games, with the lone loss coming to Auburn in 1963.
After the Tigers won three of the following four games, Alabama went on to win nine consecutive games, which is the longest winning streak in the history of the series. This stretch lasted from 1973 through 1981. In more recent times, Auburn experienced a remarkable winning streak that lasted from 2002 through 2007 and consisted of six consecutive victories.7 of 10 The James Foy ODK Trophy has emerged as a pivotal figure in the Iron Bowl’s long-standing customs.
The winner school receives the trophy at the conclusion of the basketball game in Auburn, Alabama, which takes place at the venue of the winning team. Following the conclusion of the speeches, the Student Government Association President of the school that came in last must perform the school’s fight song.8 of 10 The on-campus records are not what you would expect them to be due to the fact that the game was played in Birmingham for such a significant portion of time.
The fact that Auburn has such a good record in Tuscaloosa is particularly shocking. The Tigers have a record of 7-1 all-time in Tuscaloosa. Iron Bowl champion Auburn’s winning streak of six games was snapped by Alabama in 2008, and the victory marked the first time the Tide had prevailed in the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa.9 of 10 The Iron Bowl has consistently been a game that has significant bearing on the race for the National Championship.
- This has been abundantly clear throughout the course of the previous four years.
- It will be the fourth year in a row that either Alabama or Auburn will enter the game on Saturday rated in the top two of their respective polls heading into the contest.
- Alabama is looking to win its second national championship in the last three years, while Auburn is hoping to play the role of the spoiler.10 of 10 The race for the national championship isn’t the only thing that this game has meant recently.
It also had significant repercussions for the Heisman Trophy. Mark Ingram and Cam Newton, the eventual winners of the Heisman Trophy, were both on the teams that won the Iron Bowl in the past two years. On Saturday, Trent Richardson will attempt to make a statement of his own in the game.

Positions of Alabama and Auburn in the United States The Alabama–Auburn football rivalry, most often known as the Iron Bowl, is an American college football rivalry game played between the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn University Tigers.
Both schools are original members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This series is widely regarded as one of the most significant football matchups in the history of American sports. The term “Iron Bowl” stems from Birmingham’s historic position in the steel industry, which began in 1893 and continued for many years at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
The rivalry itself began in 1893, and for many years it was played there. The Coach of Auburn, Ralph “When asked by reporters in 1964 how he would cope with the disappointment of not bringing his team to a bowl game, “Shug” Jordan is credited with actually coining the phrase.
In response to their question, he stated, “We’ve had our bowl game. It occurs once a year without fail. It’s called the Iron Bowl and it takes place in Birmingham.” Alabama leads the series with Auburn 48–37–1 and has a winning record against every team that competes in the Southeastern Conference. Historically, the game was played during the course of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend; however, in 1993, the participating institutions came to an agreement to forward the game to the week before to Thanksgiving in order to secure a bye for themselves in the SEC Championship Game.
The conference decided in 2007 to ban any club from having a bye before the league championship game. As a result, the game was moved back to its historic position on the weekend before Thanksgiving. For a very long time, this competition has been widely regarded as one of the most intense collegiate rivalries in the United States.
The fact that these two universities have been among the best teams in the country for the most of the time since the 1950s has added fuel to the fire of this rivalry. They have a combined total of 36 SEC championships, with Alabama winning 28 and Auburn winning 8. Both Alabama and Auburn are among the most successful programs in the history of major college football.
Alabama is ranked second in all-time total victories among Division I FBS institutions, and Auburn is ranked 18th in same category. Since the late 1970s, games between these two schools have been regulars on national television; the only time since then that the season-ending clash has not been nationally televised was in 1993, when Auburn was barred from live TV due to NCAA sanctions.
- Since then, the two schools have been fixtures on national television.
- The rivalry match was held annually in Birmingham during the majority of the 20th century, with Alabama coming out on top 34 games to 19 for Auburn.
- In Montgomery, Alabama, a total of four games were played, with each side taking home two victories.
Since 1999, the games have been held in Jordan–Hare Stadium in Auburn on years ending in a number other than 2, and at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on years ending in a number other than 2.
What year was the first Iron Bowl?
The first Iron Bowl was played between Alabama and Auburn on February 22, 1893, according to NCAA.com.
When was the last time Auburn won the Iron Bowl?
(WSFA) – The University of Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn University Tigers compete against one another in a game known as “The Iron Bowl” in late November of each year. This series of games got its name from the fact that many of them were played in Birmingham, which is a city that is rich in iron.
This game is considered to be the most intense rivalry in all of college football. The first match of the series took place between the two sides at Birmingham in the year 1893. After winning the first game of the series in February, Auburn went on to win the second game of the series in November of that same year in Montgomery.
Although the first game was played more than 120 years ago, the teams have not competed against one another that frequently since then. This is due to the fact that the Tide and Tigers did not compete against each other during the years 1896 and 1900, and then again during the decades spanning from 1907 to 1948.
To this day, the two teams have competed against one another a total of 85 times in four distinct cities: Birmingham (53 times), Tuscaloosa (13 times), Montgomery (4 times), and Auburn (15x). Jordan-Hare Stadium at Auburn will be the location of the 86th match between the two teams, which is scheduled to take place in 2021.
When playing in Birmingham, Alabama held a 34-19 edge against Mississippi, but when both teams met in Montgomery, the score was knotted (2-2). The Iron Bowl was played in Montgomery for the final time in the year 1903 and in Birmingham for the final time in the year 1998.
- Since then, neither city has hosted the game.
- The games are presently played in Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn on even years and Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on odd years.
- Both stadiums are located in Alabama.
- Both Auburn stadiums contribute to the Tigers’ statistical edge (10 – 5 in Auburn and 7-6 in Tuscaloosa).
Saban has narrowed the gap between the two teams throughout his time at the Capstone, despite the fact that the Tide has a losing record versus the Tigers while playing at home. At Bryant-Denny Stadium, his teams have only ever been defeated by the Tigers on one occasion.

With 47 victories in the series, Alabama now owns the all-time lead. It currently has 37. In the history of the Iron Bowl, there has only ever been one tie between two teams. That happened in the year 1907, which is more than a century ago. Since the 1965 football season, when the Crimson Tide surged ahead of Auburn in the series with 15 victories to Auburn’s 14, it has been the Crimson Tide that has held the series advantage.
- THE STREAK OF THE IRON BOWL Under the direction of Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Alabama achieved a nine-game winning run between 1973 and 1981.
- Under the direction of Coach Tommy Tuberville, Auburn achieved a six-game winning run between the years 2002 and 2007.
- LAST WIN The final score of Alabama’s victory in 2020 was 42-13.
CURRENT WIN STREAK (As of 2020) Alabama – 1 RANK GOING IN TO 2021 IRON BOWL Alabama is rated No.3 by the Associated Press and No.2 by USA Today, while Auburn is unranked with a record of 6-5 overall and 3-4 in the SEC. GAME TIME CBS will begin broadcasting the game when the teams take the field at 2:30 in the afternoon.
FAST FACTS The 115-game scoring run that Auburn has put together is the second-longest in the annals of the school’s history. The Tigers were blanked for the last time in the 2012 Iron Bowl against then-ranked No.2 Alabama, a game in which they were routed 49-0. Nick Saban, the head coach of Alabama, has an overall record of 11-8 against Auburn, including a record of 9-5 when he was at UA.
Bryan Harsin, who is in his first year as head coach at Auburn, had never competed against an Alabama team. At least one team is rated in the AP Top 25 heading into the Iron Bowl for the 36th consecutive year, dating back to 1980. In 1982, 1998, and 2003, neither team appeared in any rankings.

Who is University of Alabama biggest rival?
Windham’s Take: – In spite of the fact that Alabama’s success over the course of the previous 15 years under Nick Saban has changed the way that many regard some of the program’s historic rivalries, I would argue that the Crimson Tide’s three largest rivals have remained the same.
Because Alabama football is such a well-known program across the country and recruits athletes from all across the United States, I sometimes get the impression that the players don’t fully appreciate the gravity of their competitions. On the other hand, these rivalries are as strong as ever for the supporters who hail from the state of Alabama.
The Iron Bowl is a competition that hasn’t exactly lost any of its allure over the years. Throughout Saban’s time in Tuscaloosa, the Auburn program has been the one that has presented him with the most challenges. The head coach at Alabama has a lower winning percentage against Auburn than against any other opponent.
- There have been a number of incredible games played in the Iron Bowl, the most recent of which being the Crimson Tide’s triumph in four overtimes last year.
- The fact that these two colleges are located so close to one another and have strong links to the state ensures that their long-standing rivalry will never end.
On the other side, Alabama is undefeated against Tennessee in Saban’s tenure as head coach. Some people might assume that this makes the competition less intense. It’s possible that younger Crimson Tide supporters don’t get the animosity that’s directed against Tennessee, but if you ask any older fan about Peyton Manning or Phillip Fulmer, you’ll quickly have all of your questions answered.
- Despite the fact that there haven’t been many nail-biters in recent memory, this rivalry has too much history to be put to rest.
- Some of the traditions include awarding cigars to the victorious team, while others include playing on the third Saturday of October.
- The addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the league will undoubtedly result in the termination of several long-standing rivalries.
Alabama’s two largest rivalries will continue to exist so long as the Crimson Tide continues to face Auburn and Tennessee on an annual basis. Georgia has surged up the ranks in recent years with multiple epic matches between the Crimson Tide and the Bulldogs.
LSU would be considered the more traditional third foe, but Georgia has moved up the ranks in recent years. The two clubs do not face each other very often during the regular season, but their continuing success has brought them together in the postseason on several occasions. This budding rivalry doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon as long as both coaches are still at their respective schools.
Kirby Smart finally defeated his former boss in the national title game, and as long as both coaches are still at their respective schools, this budding rivalry will continue.
Is the Iron Bowl a real bowl game?
It is either the last weekend of the regular season for college football or the penultimate weekend of the regular season, depending on whether or not your school participates in the Big 12 conference. The calendar is littered with rivalry games, and Chuck Culpepper of The Post does an excellent job of breaking each one down.
- In any case, you might be wondering where all of these competitions and prizes came up with their names in the first place.
- This is how their stories go.
- The Bowl of Iron (No.1 Alabama vs.
- No.15 Auburn, 7:45 p.m.
- Saturday, ESPN) According to a report that was published on AL.com on Wednesday, Tigers Coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan is the one who originally referred to the Alabama vs.
Auburn game as “the Iron Bowl” in 1964: Reporters from Auburn wanted to know how head coach Ralph “Shug” Jordan would cope with the crushing blow of learning that his squad would not be participating in a bowl game. In an article published in 1995, Bryan recounted Jordan’s remark as follows: “We will be playing in our bowl game.
- It occurs once a year without fail.
- It’s called the Iron Bowl and it takes place in Birmingham.” Iron Bowl games were formerly played at Birmingham, Alabama’s Legion Field, which is considered to be a neutral location.
- According to legend, the game got its name from the city of Birmingham’s close vicinity to several iron mines.
Old Oaken Bucket (Indiana vs. Purdue, noon Saturday, Big Ten Network) The first time this trophy was given out was in 1925, when alumni groups in Chicago representing both colleges came to the conclusion that “an ancient oaken bucket would be a very characteristic trophy from this state and should be collected from a well someplace in Indiana.” On a farm located between Kent and Hanover in Southern Indiana, they were able to locate an appropriately aged oaken bucket.
- The victor adds a “I” or “P” link to the chain that is tied to their prize.
- Egg Bowl (No.19 Ole Miss vs.
- No.4 Mississippi State, 3:30 p.m.
- Saturday, CBS) After the Rebels ended a losing skid of 13 games versus their adversaries in 1926, chaos broke out and spectators were hurt as a result; as a result, the two schools who competed against each other agreed to establish a prize called the Golden Egg to help deter future acts of violence.
An Ole Miss honors organization known as Sigma Iota came up with the idea for the trophy, which is described as “a regulation-size gold-plated football put on a pedestal” on the university’s official website. The game was not given the nickname “Egg Bowl” until the late 1970s, when a sports editor at a newspaper in Mississippi came up with the term in an effort to ratchet up the intensity of the rivalry between the two schools.
Paul Bunyan’s Axe (No.14 Wisconsin vs. No.18 Minnesota, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Big Ten Network) The Badgers and the Gophers used to compete for something that was referred to as the “Slab of Bacon.” In reality, the “Slab of Bacon” was a piece of wood that included a football with the letter “M” or “W,” denoting the winner, and the word “bacon” on both ends of the football.
The victor “brought home the bacon” in this competition. Get it? However, after the game in 1943, the Slab of Bacon vanished, and it wasn’t found again until 1994, when it was located in a storage closet. According to the Badger Herald, the replacement trophy, known as the Paul Bunyan Axe, “was produced in 1948 by the Wisconsin letterwinners’ group.” The old scoreboard was removed from the College Football Hall of Fame in the year 2003 because it was showing its age and had no more room to record the scores of individual games.
The claiming of the axe at the end of each game is quite a spectacle to witness, as the winner acts as if they are chopping down the goal post of the losing side. Apple Cup (Washington State vs. Washington, 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Fox Sports 1) In the beginning, the Cougars and Huskies competed against one another for the Governor’s Trophy, which was a 40-pound bronze shield.
However, the trophy was lost sometime during World War II (someone later tried to sell it in bankruptcy court in the late 1990s). The Apple Cup is an annual competition that began in 1962. It honors the state of Washington for its contribution of around 64 percent of the apples harvested in the United States.
How many times has Auburn beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl?
When they play host to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Iron Bowl this coming Saturday, Auburn will have their work cut out for them. When the Iron Bowl has been held at Jordan-Hare Stadium in the past, the Tigers have been able to pull off some miraculous feats.
- Three of the previous four Iron Bowls have been played in Jordan-Hare Stadium, and Auburn has won all three of them, including the 2019 game, which was played on the Plains.
- The overall record between Auburn and Alabama in the Iron Bowl stands at 37-47-1 for Auburn.
- In the most recent contest, Alabama emerged victorious.
During the 2002–2007 seasons, Auburn’s longest victory streak ever was six consecutive victories. In the Iron Bowl, Alabama’s greatest win run was nine consecutive victories between 1973 and 1981. Is Auburn academically better than Alabama?
According to a new survey that was conducted by a national financial advisory site, the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn does not come close to being a competition when it comes to best overall institutions for students. According to the findings of a study conducted by WalletHub, the Institution of Alabama is the most reputable college or university in the state.
- According to this, Auburn is ranked ninth in the state, only one spot ahead of Alabama-Huntsville.
- The rankings took into consideration a variety of factors, including the cost of each institution, the admissions process, the access to resources that the staff has, on-campus safety, the median wage of past students, and more.
The University of Alabama had the third-best graduation rate in the state and the sixth-best median wage among former students. Both of these rankings were tied for third place. The University of West Alabama came in at number two overall and was found to have the highest admission rate, lowest net cost, and most gender and racial diversity of any school in the state.
Additionally, it was ranked number 7 for the lowest amount of crime that occurred on campus. The University of Montevallo came in at number three on the list of the top colleges in Alabama. It had the third-best admission rate in the state, the fifth-best on-campus crime rate, and the fifth-best student-faculty ratio.
The rankings include all four-year institutions that are either publicly funded or privately funded by non-profit organizations, with the exception of a few schools that did not have sufficient data in all of the categories. Amridge University, Athens State University, Judson College, Miles College, Stillman College, and Talladega College were some of the institutions in the state of Alabama that were not taken into consideration.
- Even the greatest athletes in the state were unable to break the top 200 in the country.
- The University of Alabama came in at number 258 on the list of schools and institutions located all around the United States.
- First place was awarded to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by Harvard and Princeton in that order.
At number 11, Vanderbilt University was the best school in the Southeastern region. When only colleges in Alabama that did not provide graduate degrees were considered, Birmingham-Southern University emerged as the state’s most prestigious educational institution.
According to WalletHub’s ranking, it came in at number 52 among all universities in the United States. The Huntingdon Institution campus in Montgomery, Alabama, achieved a national ranking of number 91, which was excellent enough to earn it the position as the state’s second-best college. According to WalletHub, these are the top 10 schools in the state of Alabama.

What is the lowest Iron Bowl score?
The 25th of November in 2011 0 of 10 When Alabama and Auburn play one other on Saturday, it will be the next chapter in a rivalry that is often considered to be among the finest in all of sports. As is customary, a great deal depends on the outcome of the Iron Bowl.
- In the past several years, there have been few few games that have held as much meaning as this one.
- Once more, fans will be watching the game because of its mystery as well as its significance to the world.
- There is a probability that Alabama will win the National Championship if they are successful.
The fact that Auburn has such a good record in Tuscaloosa is particularly shocking. The Tigers have a record of 7-1 all-time in Tuscaloosa. Iron Bowl champion Auburn’s winning streak of six games was snapped by Alabama in 2008, and the victory was the Tide’s first ever in Tuscaloosa, where the game was played.9 of 10 The Iron Bowl has consistently been a game that has significant bearing on the race for the National Championship.
This has been abundantly clear throughout the course of the previous four years. It will be the fourth year in a row that either Alabama or Auburn will enter the game on Saturday rated in the top two of their respective polls heading into the contest. Alabama is looking to win its second national championship in the past three years, while Auburn is hoping to play the role of the spoiler.10 of 10 The race for the national championship isn’t the only thing that this game has meant recently.
